Landfills can pollute our land, water and air if they’re not managed in the right way. If you operate a landfill, you must comply with laws that help prevent pollution.

Landfills must follow EPA’s best practice guidance. It includes how to:

  • choose a landfill site that causes the least risk to the environment and community
  • design a landfill that can protect the environment
  • operate, monitor and audit a landfill to show you’re complying with your landfill licence
  • reduce the landfill’s impact on the environment when it closes.

You must follow this guidance when applying for works approvals or landfill licences.

Landfill operators must also pay landfill and prescribed waste levies. This money helps improve waste management across Victoria.
