2017–18 highlights

EPA is Victoria’s environmental regulator. We exist to protect the environment and people by preventing and reducing harm from pollution and waste.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve been delivering a whole of organisation transformation program to bring to life the Victorian Government’s vision for a modern, world class environmental regulator.

Our success stories


We're committed to putting Victoria’s environment and health at the centre of everything we do. 2017–18 was a year of significant achievement, with our people working to ensure the best outcomes for communities and the environment.

Preventing harm in Stawell

In 2017–18, EPA successfully removed Victoria’s largest tyre stockpile. Located on the western outskirts of Stawell, the stockpile was estimated at more than one million tyres and posed an extreme fire risk to the township and surrounding communities.

Victoria’s Chief Environmental Scientist: a credible voice

In 2017, EPA welcomed Chief Environmental Scientist (CES) Dr Andrea Hinwood – marking a significant milestone in our work to become a world class regulator. Since joining EPA, Dr Hinwood has played a key advisory role.

EPA has established a dedicated environmental public health function to provide specialist advice on the public health impacts from past, present and future waste and pollution.

Dealing with emerging contaminants

Over the past year, a key focus of EPA’s Applied Science Directorate has been understanding the extent and characteristics of emerging contaminants in the Victorian environment.

As Victoria’s environmental regulator, a key part of our role is taking strong, timely and effective action to use our authority and influence to uphold environmental standards, drive improvement and give Victorians confidence that polluters will be held to account.

Targeting illegal waste disposal

Illegal dumping has significant impacts on human health and the environment and costs Victorians around $30 million a year in cleanup costs and lost landfill levy revenue. That's why we're taking action.

Tackling local pollution and waste issues

Our Officers for the Protection of the Local Environment (OPLEs) are working in partnership with councils to address small-scale pollution and waste issues.

Assisting communities during Victoria's emergency response

Over the weekend of 17–18 March 2018, four fires burnt through approximately 15,000 hectares in Victoria’s south-west. In response, EPA provided incident air monitoring, including hourly air quality readings.

Supporting industry to comply

In July 2017, EPA established a new unit to help industry and business better understand and comply with their environmental obligations.

Lifting standards at recycling facilities

In July 2017, Victoria witnessed the impact of fire on the community and environment when the SKM Recycling plant in Coolaroo caught fire. EPA chaired the Resource Recovery Facilities Audit Taskforce, audited sites and worked with Government and industry to lift standards at recycling facilities across the state.
