Setting and reviewing standards

Statutory policy review 2012

EPA and the Department of Environment and Primary industries (DEPI) completed the joint review of the framework for statutory policies – State environment protection policies (SEPPs) and waste management policies (WMPs) – in 2013.

The review examined the statutory policy framework including its function, structure, content, effectiveness and management.

The Final report (publication 1498) and Summary (publication 1463) can be accessed via the links.

The review recommended actions to simplify and clarify the focus of statutory policies, improve their implementation and strengthen links with other statutory systems (such as planning). These actions will also improve the readability and accessibility of statutory policies.

Implementing the review’s recommendations will provide an environmental policy framework that can respond to future challenges and protect our environment. It will provide for a best-practice approach to environmental regulation and offer Victorian communities and businesses greater certainty and clarity.

Next steps

Many of the recommendations from the Statutory Policy Review will be implemented when individual statutory policies (SEPPs and WMPs) are formally reviewed. A work program of statutory policy reviews has commenced and will be rolled out over coming years. Information on individual statutory policy reviews and how you can be involved will be made available on the Environmental Standards Reform page.
